At Chen Tai Chi Academy , we are honored to study and pass on the authentic teachings of Chen-style Tai Chi , rooted in the wisdom of our lineage holder, Grandmaster Zhu Tian Cai (朱天才) — known not only for his mastery but also for his deep understanding of internal energy and movement.
The following teaching, titled “Tian Cai Quan Lun” (天才拳论), or “A Genius’ Treatise on Martial Arts,” beautifully illustrates how the fundamental techniques of Tai Chi—specifically Peng (Ward-off) and Lu (Rollback) —form the foundation of all advanced movements.
This piece is more than just technical instruction; it is a window into the mind of a true master, whose name itself carries the word 天才 — meaning both “genius” and referring directly to Grandmaster Zhu Tian Cai .
🌟 “Lu” (Rollback) in Tai Chi:
- Peng (Ward-off) gives rise to Lu (Rollback) .
- The technique of Lu lies within the circle.
- Lu consists of both Shun Chan (following spiral energy) and Ni Chan (reverse spiral energy).
- Peng and Lu are the foundation.
- Peng and Lu rely entirely on Qi (internal energy).
- All martial techniques are contained within them.
- Master Peng and Lu well,
And you will naturally generate An (Press) and Ji (Squeeze) . - Only after thoroughly practicing the Four Cardinal Directions
Should one proceed to apply the Four Diagonal Energies .
— Tian Cai Quan Lun
A Theory by Grandmaster Zhu Tian Cai – A True “Genius” of Tai Chi
🧘♂️ Reflection & Meaning:
This short verse captures the essence of Tai Chi’s internal mechanics and philosophy. It begins with Peng , the foundational energy that protects and expands space around the body. From Peng arises Lu , the skilful redirection of an opponent’s force through circular, spiralling motion — whether flowing with or against their direction (Shun Chan and Ni Chan ).
It reminds us that mastery of the basics leads to natural progression in form and application. When Peng and Lu are deeply understood, the techniques of An (press) and Ji (squeeze) emerge organically. And only when the core directions — front, back, left, right — are second nature, can one begin to explore the diagonal energies — the deeper expressions of Tai Chi’s power and sensitivity.
This teaching is a reminder that true Tai Chi is not about complexity , but depth. Every movement returns to the source.
